Letter from the Founders
For former athletes like us, team meals — before and after games — carry so many core memories and laughs. They really are special. Nowadays, it's nearly impossible to get 5-10 of my boys together to eat out.
It's also what makes your career coming to a close so hard. In my case, it even resulted in a full-blown identity crisis. And it should. So much time and effort went into being an athlete. No one could expect us to just flip the switch overnight and become someone else.
Going through this identity crisis shouldn't come easy to anyone who truly cared about their sport. But in these moments is where some tough lessons we learned as athletes can shine through:
- You can still be an athlete — both physically and at heart. You owe it to yourself to continuously improve, whether there's a game this weekend or not.
- Invest in your team. You're not wearing a jersey anymore, but that doesn't mean you're not on a team. Continue to show up for your colleagues, your family, and your community.
- Be coachable. It's such a good skill to have in life. Find a mentor, really listen to your boss, observe people you look up to. You still deserve to be coached.
Staying an athlete is your journey, your ownership.
Once an athlete, always an athlete. Enjoy this week's edition of IDNTY — Athletes for Life.

Bend It Forever: David Beckham on Staying Elite, Building Empires & Owning Your Athletic Identity After the Final Whistle

You know the moment. The last whistle blows, the final match ends, the cleats get hung up for good. For David Beckham, it was May 2013 in Paris — after a glittering career that took him from Manchester United to Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and PSG. 20+ years of elite football, six Premier League titles, one Champions League, 115 England caps, and a global brand built on precision, work rate, and that famous right foot.
But here's what separates Beckham from the rest: the final whistle didn't end his athletic identity. It unlocked a new level.
At 50, he's leaner, stronger in places he never trained before, running businesses that generate hundreds of millions, co-owning a rising MLS powerhouse, launching game-changing supplements, and still training like the competitor he's always been — only smarter, more balanced, and deeply purposeful.
Where The Legends Train: Aaron Rodgers, Ryan Capretta & Proactive Sports Performance

It hits every former high school and college athlete at some point. The games are over, the crowds have faded, but that competitive fire still burns. Your body remembers what it felt like to move at full speed, to compete with purpose, to feel unbreakable. The uniform may be retired, but the athlete inside you isn't.
This is where stories like Ryan Capretta's and Proactive Sports Performance become more than inspiration — they become a practical roadmap for the next chapter. For nearly two decades, Proactive in Westlake Village, California has been the quiet training home for some of the biggest names in sports, from Clay Matthews to Aaron Rodgers. Founded in 2006, the 18,000-square-foot facility isn't built on hype. It's built on science, personalization, and an unrelenting focus on helping athletes not just perform, but last.
Cutting Through the Noise with Erica Mulholland

For most of your life, you poured everything into the game — high school varsity, college, the late-night lifts, the early-morning sprints. Then life hit: the 9-to-5, the kids, the never-ending to-do list. But that fire? That athletic identity that made you feel unstoppable? It doesn't have to fade. And you definitely don't have to live in fear of injury just because you're a woman who once played at a high level.
Enter Erica Mulholland — former 3x All-American soccer player and Hall of Famer at Johns Hopkins, now a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach with 14+ years coaching female athletes. She's seen the fear-mongering cycle repeat itself for decades, and she's calling it out.
The Pause That Changes Everything

You crossed the finish line of your last season — high school state champs, college All-Conference, maybe even a pro camp or two. The cleats came off, the pads went into storage, and real life accelerated: jobs, marriages, kids, businesses, responsibilities stacking up. The daily structure that once defined you — practices, film, team lifts, bus rides — disappeared almost overnight.
Now, halfway through the year, that quiet question keeps surfacing: Who am I now? What's my purpose when there's no more scoreboard?
Todd Durkin has the answer, and it's not another goal-setting frenzy or motivational hack. It's a pause. A deliberate, athlete-minded reflection that turns the first half of your year into rocket fuel for the rest of it.
